Custom Automation

Sometimes, our customers come to us wanting to automate an operation that doesn’t easily fit into any one box or type. For these processes, Automated Systems, Inc. offers our expertise in custom automation to design and engineer solutions tailored to the specific needs of each process.

We offer end-to-end custom automation solutions. Everything, from design to mechanical and electrical layouts, control panel building, fabrication, assembly, delivery, and installation, is handled in-house by our expert team. At its most basic, custom automation is simple – you tell us what process you want to automate, and we’ll create a cell or system that automates it.

Brief Case Studies in Automation

Here are a few examples of custom automations that we’ve taken on in the past.

Combining Alignment and Sonic Welding

A customer was experiencing quality issues with their sonic welding station, as the initial machine was unable to consistently and correctly load the materials, resulting in poor welds. ASI designed a unit that allowed an operator to load the materials and then move the temporary assembly to the welding unit, where it was automatically compressed and clipped into place, welded, and then released. An HMI screen notified the operator when it was time to move the finished part to its next stage.

Robotic Deburring

One of our repeat customers was having an issue with burring on machined parts, burrs that were too difficult to remove during the machining process. We equipped an existing robot with a pressure sensor and deburring tools to automatically clean parts once they left the machine.

We have also developed another deburring unit for a different customer, specifically designed to clean engine connecting rods. This was a unique cell compared to our equipped robot and was designed for a much different part.

A New Spin on Material Handling

One of ASI’s customers came to us seeking to expedite the unloading of heat treat racks, which was typically done by an operator removing one part at a time. We developed a system that allowed the operator to load the entire tray into a rotating unit, then roll the tray over and deposit parts onto an accumulating table.
